Attend ITC's Summer Distance Education Leadership Academy

ITC 2013 Leadership Academy - July 19-21, 2012 Minneapolis, MN
July 19-21, 2012
Minneapolis, Minnesota
The Westin Minneapolis

This year’s three-day ITC Leadership Academy will be in beautiful downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Westin Minneapolis. The focus for this year's academy will be providing leadership development in a changing eLearning environment.

The faculty will provide immersive opportunities and incorporate scenario-based learning activities to explore how effective leadership in eLearning can: harness technology to achieve program success; provide outstanding academic and student support; keep pace with, and influence,  changing federal policies, such as state authorization for out-of-state institutions, student authentication, and accreditation; leverage internal campus politics; incorporate data-driven decision making into your planning, and improve course and program quality to enhance student retention and completion rates.

The agenda is participant-driven and includes readings and online discussion work prior to meeting in Minneapolis.  The face-to-face meetings will include three days filled with discussions with eLearning experts and practitioners, hand's on activities, group work and reflection.  Limited to 25 participants. The application deadline: June 8, 2012.

In Focus: The Year in Review 2011

Most states and campuses have adjusted to doing more with less as the effects of the Great Recession have lingered into 2011.  The economic downturn has impacted higher education as a whole, and distance education programs have suffered, especially in the areas of budget and staffing. Colleges have lacked the funding to address the chronic problems of student retention, course quality, ADA compliance, faculty training, student preparedness and accreditation-based assessment.

Focus areas in 2011 included moving to the cloud, shifting to mobile devices, the future of the learning management system, regional accreditation, and open educational resources.

Not surprisingly, the federal and state government’s interest in distance education has intensified, as student demand and enrollment in distance education has increased. Congress reauthorizes the Higher Education Act of 1965 every four to six years, so distance educators need to pay close attention to any new regulations Congress may attempt to put in place by 2014. Some key issues include: state authorization for institutions offering distance education to out-of-state students, financial aid fraud rings and student authentication.
