Position Summary:  The role of instructional design specialist is to provide instructional design expertise in the development and support of online, hybrid, and traditional courses. This involves working with faculty and staff to design, develop, and create high quality courses that incorporate best practices in pedagogy, methodology, use of digital content and course outcomes. Furthermore, provide support to academic departments and students in the use of the various components and integrated tools of the campus learning management system (Brightspace by D2L).

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the management and support of the learning management system (Brightspace by D2L)
  • Lead training sessions and/or face-to-face sessions for faculty in the use of instructional technologies including mobile technologies and development of course materials including social media tools, audio, and video for engagement of student learning
  • Development of training materials for faculty, staff, and students
  • Monitor, maintain, and backup department WordPress site
  • Train and assist faculty with accessibility compliance
  • Remain current with emerging technologies, new products, methodologies, and pedagogy
  • Assist faculty, staff, and students in solving technology issues
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree in instructional design or educational technology, or related academic discipline required, Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in instructional design, educational technology, or distance learning in higher education
  • Experience with supporting and using Course Management Systems such as D2L, Canvas, or Blackboard
  • Experience with webpage development, maintenance, and monitoring
  • Experience with training, staff development and/or teaching
  • Online teaching experience or experience as an online learner
  • Solid understanding of pedagogical principles in relationship to adult learners
  • Proficiency with multiple platforms including Mac and PC skills
  • Experience integrating Web 2.0 tools such as wikis, blogs, and podcasts into the curriculum
  • Experience with video editing software such as iMovie, Camtasia, Adobe Premiere, or Final Cut Pro
  • Experience with web conferencing software such as Adobe Connect, YouSeeU, or Zoom
  • Experience with development tools such as Articulate Studio/Storyline, Adobe Captivate, or Camtasia
  • Experience with HTML, Cloud computing, and mobile technologies including smartphones, eReaders, and tablets is a plus
  • Experience with VR/AR/MR hardware/software is a plus
