ITC is an affiliated council of American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). ITC is headquartered in Mount Royal, NJ and collaborates closely with the AACC staff, especially when advocating legislative activity that will affect the eLearning programs at community colleges.
In 1977, a committee of the board of directors of the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges created the “Task Force on the Uses of Mass Media for Learning."  In 1993, the Instructional Technology Council (ITC) became its own separate 501(c)(3) organization.
AACC is the national voice for community colleges in the United States and Canada.  It provides institutional support in the areas of professional development, legislative advocacy, networking, publications, grant development, and telecommunications for its members.

As one of AACC’s 30 affiliated councils, ITC:
  • Competes for one of six seats on the AACC board of directors reserved for Council representatives, and,
  • Participates in the annual fall meeting of council chairs for the specific purpose of helping develop a working agenda for the community college community.
  • Helps review those proposals received for the program of the AACC Annual Convention that concern distance education.
  • Appoints a representative to serve a one-year term on AACC’s Commission on Learning and Communications Technologiesand AACC's Commission on Academic, Student and Community Development.  Members of AACC’s eight commissions include CEOs and administrators from AACC member institutions plus additional people from organizations that work in areas that are relevant to the specific commissions' charges.  These commissions provide advice to the AACC board and staff; encourage collaboration among community college entities and organizations; provide a forum for focused conversation about the important community college issues and priorities of the day; provide for increased involvement in the association by AACC member CEOs and other professional staff; and, provide leadership opportunities for members of the AACC board of directors (who serve as chairs).
